IT Society’s Git & GitHub Workshop

On the 9th of April, IT Society MMU hosted an engaging Git & GitHub Workshop at AGMO Space, bringing together 20 participants for a hands-on session on version control and collaboration.

The session was led by Ms. Sofia Hanisman, who walked participants through Git and GitHub with a mix of live demos and hands-on practice.

Getting Started with Git

The workshop kicked off with an introduction to Git and GitHub, helping participants understand how developers track changes and manage projects efficiently. From navigating the command line to understanding how Git works behind the scenes, students were guided step-by-step through the essentials.

Hands-On with Real Workflows

This session was all about learning by doing. Through live demos and guided exercises, participants created their own repositories, practiced commands like git init, git add, and git commit, and explored how to track and manage changes in their projects.

Things got even more interesting as they moved into branching and merging, learning how to work on different features without breaking the main project and even tackling merge conflicts like real developers!

Collaborating Through GitHub

The session didn’t just stop at working individually; participants also got a feel of how collaboration works using GitHub. From cloning repositories to pushing their own changes, everyone got to see how multiple people can work on the same project without things getting messy.

Pull requests were also introduced, which gave a glimpse into how developers review and merge each other’s work in actual team environments.

Building Skills for the Future

By the end of the workshop, what started off as something quite unfamiliar became a lot more manageable. Commands that looked confusing at first slowly started to make sense as participants practiced them step by step.

It wasn’t just about learning Git commands, but understanding how everything connects, from making small changes to managing a whole project over time.

We really appreciate everyone who joined the session, and hopefully this gave you a solid starting point to keep exploring, whether it’s for your assignments, personal projects, or future internships.

See you in future events!
