Unlocking the Power of the Terminal
Understanding how to work with the terminal is an essential skill for many areas in tech, from software development to system administration.
To help students become more familiar with command-line environments, IT Society MMU organised the Bash & Linux Workshop at Agmo Space, gathering 17 participants for an interactive and beginner-friendly learning session on the 29th of April.

Led by Izzminhal, the workshop introduced participants to Linux fundamentals, command-line navigation, and useful Bash tools that can improve both productivity and technical confidence.
The workshop began with an introduction to Linux, where participants learned about the operating system, the difference between the terminal and shell, and how commands are interpreted and executed. Through live demonstrations, participants followed along while learning essential commands commonly used for system navigation and file management.
Learning Linux in Practice

Throughout the session, participants explored key Linux concepts such as navigating directories, managing files and folders, viewing file contents, and understanding basic permission systems. Izzminhal also introduced useful command-line tools, shortcuts, and beginner-friendly text editing using Nano.

To reinforce learning, mini challenges and milestone activities were included throughout the workshop, allowing participants to apply what they had learned while receiving guidance and support from our committee members whenever needed.
Introduction to Bash Scripting

Moving forward with the workshop, participants were briefly introduced to Bash scripting fundamentals. This included basic script structure, simple commands, and an overview of how scripting can be used to automate repetitive tasks and improve workflow efficiency.
This gave participants a better understanding of how Bash can be used beyond simple commands, opening up more possibilities for automation and productivity.
Wrapping Up

Refreshments were provided during the workshop, creating a comfortable environment for participants to learn and practice at their own pace. The session concluded with a feedback session and a group photo.
Overall, the workshop provided participants with an introduction to Linux and Bash through a combination of explanations and hands-on activities. Topics such as terminal navigation, file management, permissions, and shell scripting were explored, giving attendees exposure to concepts and tools commonly used in Linux environments. The session offered a practical overview of these fundamentals and showed their relevance in technical and computing-related workflows.
